A message from Dr. Williams:
I am very concerned about travelers who fail to get the appropriate
vaccines and medications before they travel. Unfortunately, travelers
do catch serious diseases and may even end up hospitalized.
Regretfully, these diseases could  even result in fatalities- all due to
the lack of disease prevention. I strongly suggest that travelers, at
the very least, visit the CDC website to get information on the country
they plan to visit. Click-
CDC Travel Website  I am amazed with the
number of diseases around the world that most of us in the United
States have never even heard of.

Travelers often make the mistake of expecting their travel agent to
advise them on health risks and preventive measures to take. Travel
agents do not have any training in this area and may be unaware of
the travel risks. Some travel agents may be fearful that the travelers
would cancel if the health risks were known. I think that travel agents
should at least refer travelers visiting Africa, South America, and
Asia, to a Travel Clinic, or the CDC Travel Website, before they take
their trips.

Travelers returning to their to their county of birth to visit friends and
relatives (VFRs), have the greatest risk of infection and illness. VFRs
have a greater incidence of travel-related infectious diseases, such
as malaria, typhoid fever, yellow fever, tuberculous, hepatitis A,
intestinal infections, and sexually transmitted diseases than other
groups of international travelers. There are many reasons such as a
lack of awareness of risks, a belief that they are immune, and
bringing family members and children who have never been to their
country.

Some travelers are considered high risk or have special needs such
as:
-women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
-people with weak immune systems
-young children or older travelers ( aged 60 or older)
-people with medical conditions such as diabetes, respiratory
problems, and cardiac problems
-people traveling to adopt children
-missionaries or other service workers

Even, non-life threatening medical conditions can be a problem. For
example, traveler's diarrhea, occurs in up 60% of travelers to Africa,
Asia, or South America. It certainly has ruined many a vacation.
Motion sickness and altitude sickness can be prevented with the
appropriate medications.

Please take the time to protect yourselves, and your loved ones, from
diseases and other medical conditions before you travel.
